MAUS Help for Downloading/Viewing PDF Files

If you are having problems downloading/viewing PDF files from the MAUS web site, the following tips and instructions may help you.

What are "PDF" files?

MAUS's guide summaries and information booklets are stored in PDF format for downloading/viewing by customers. The PDF file format (Portable Document Format) is one of the most universal file formats in the world for distributing and viewing information online. PDF files can only be viewed if you have the free "Adobe Acrobat Reader" software installed on your computer.

About MAUS's Guide Summaries

MAUS's 20-page guide summaries are available as a free download in PDF format. The file size of the guide summaries are between 250Kb and 350Kb. Depending on the speed of your modem connection they can take a couple of minutes to download. If you are finding it too slow to view over the internet, you can either download the file to your computer's hard drive, or request a copy to be posted to you.

These are free downloadable versions of the popular print publications which are sold nationally through newsagents ($2.95 RRP). The file size of these downloadable files are between 800Kb and 1.5Mb. Depending on the speed of your modem connection they can take a few minutes to download. If you are finding it too slow to view over the internet, you can either download the file to your computer's hard drive, or request a copy to be posted to you.

What if I don't have Acrobat Reader installed on my Computer?

Adobe Acrobat Reader is normally freely available on many CD Roms from sources including; the front cover of leading computer magazines and software packages that you have purchased. For your convenience, if you cannot locate a copy of the software, you can download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader for Microsoft Windows 95/98/Me, NT and 2000 from the following locations:

 Tucows at iiNet
 Adobe Systems

Instructions For Downloading & Installing Acrobat Reader

  1. Download the Acrobat Reader from one of the above links.
  2. When the download window appears, select the "save this program to disk" option and click "OK".
  3. Choose a directory on your local hard drive to save the software program to.
  4. The file you are downloading is "ar500enu.exe". It is ~8.5Mb so depending on the speed of your modem it could take 20 - 30 minutes. Be patient, it's worth it - and remember which directory you have downloaded it to on your hard drive!!
  5. Once it has finished downloading, you MUST install the software on your computer. You can do this by "double-clicking" on the "ar500enu.exe" file and following the installation prompts.
  6. Now you are ready to view PDF's online!!

How Do I Know If The Acrobat Reader Software Is Installed Correctly?

If Acrobat Reader is correctly installed on your computer, when you try to view a PDF file via the MAUS site, your browser should automatically launch the Acrobat Reader software via a built-in "plug-in". The PDF file should download and open on-screen within your browser automatically. (Theoretically!!)

While the summary is downloading, the middle of your screen should be "white". This is normal! Depending on your modem speed, the first page may take a couple of miutes to appear. If the "plug-in" for viewing PDF files in your browser is not installed correctly you should get a prompt to save the PDF file to your computer's hard drive. Remember which directory you save the file to! Once the PDF is downloaded, simply "double-click" on the PDF file to launch Acrobat Reader and view the document. Alternatively, try launching the Acrobat Reader software manually via the "start" menu. It should be under "programs".

If you are still having problems, Contact MAUS and we will try and help you.
